The women’s museum in Norway is nominated as the Museum of the Year in Norway, together with two other candidates. The winner will be awarded at the National Museum Meeting “Diverse Sustainability” in Porsgrunn-Skien on 6 April.

The nomination for this important award is a wonderful recognition for the work of the Women’s Museum Norway, of its academic directors, presently Thea Aarbakke and formerly Mona Holm (IAWM’s current president), its department director Mona Pedersen, and of the whole museum team. Congratulations!

It is also a great inspiration and encouragement for all women’s museums around the world. Especially since it is not the first time that the meaningful work of women’s museums is recognized in a well noted award.

In 2017 the Women’s Museum Hittisau received the Austrian Museum Prize and in 2021 it was nominated for the important European Museum of the Year Award.

The jury for the Museum of the Year Award in Norway 2022 emphasizes that the nominated museums “are genuinely concerned with exercising their social role and working with important groups and central topics in their local area”.

The museum association Norway writes:

The museum plays an important role nationally and internationally as the museum heads both the Museum Network for Women’s History and the International Association of Women’s Museums (IAWM).

In particular, the jury will highlight the exhibition “Shhh! Stories about abortion and sexuality.” Here, the museum exemplarily manages to convey a very difficult narrative, and does so in a way that allows for discussion and understanding.

As IAWM we are proud of our member museum and keep our fingers crossed!
