Woman of the Year award in the Women’s Museum Meran on 9th March 2019.

On Saturday, 9th March, the Women’s Museum in Merano first announced the #ichfraudesjahres (woman of the year). Since two years, the Women’s Museum of Merano has been running the blog ichfrau.com in order to extend its awareness-raising work beyond the museum to the internet.

In 2018, the #fraudesmonats (woman of the month) section was introduced in the ichfrau blog. It wants to act as counterpart to the beauty competitions in the region. Each first day of the month the blog honores one woman of the month. The criterion for the selection is that these women have chosen unusual occupations and life paths, or made groundbreaking decisions.

Yesterday evening the Women’s Museum Meran, Italy presented their new book Meraner Geschichte_n. It is a city guide – but not just any city guide. It tells the history of Meran from a female point of view. It was long overdue to tell the many female stories of the city and so the museum published this book at the 700 year anniversary of the city. The book was written by the Women’s Museum Meran in collaboration with our very own coordinator Astrid Schönweger.  It has been published in German and Italian.

Our museum exists since 1988 and is administrated by a private association. Our rooms are spreading over 800 sqm on the two upper floors of a former nunnery in Merano, Italy.

The objects in our exhibition range from clothing, accessoires to objects of daily use and are telling histories of women from the past 200 years. They invite to discover fashion trends, social roles and the changing ideals of beauty.

In special exhibitions and various events there is an enlargement of the repertoire of female-specific and gender sensitive topics year after year.

We consider the museum not only as a place to look at, but as a place to experience, to discuss in workshops and meetings.  It has become an active cultural center in this region of Northern Italy.
