Poster Art and Solidarity

Jul 5, 2022

“because women are creating culture”
“because women have the view”
“because women write history”

These are just a few of the statements on the posters above that campaign for the preservation of the Museum of Women‘s Culture Regional – International. In January 2022, when it was finally certain that our premises would be sold, we called for a poster campaign expressing why it would be unthinkable for the city of Fürth to be without a women‘s museum.

From January 2nd to March 8th, we received 51 submissions, 68 poster designs are pictured in this publication and 4 of those submissions came from men.
In 2003 the Nuremberg-based association Women in One World, Center for Intercultural Research on Women‘s Everyday Lives and International Exchange founded the Museum of Women‘s Culture Regional-International as a mobile museum for downtown revitalization in Fürth.

Then in 2006, the city of Fürth made the Márstall (royal stables) of Burgfarrnbach Castle available to us. A win-win solution! We received a wonderful place for our work, rent-free, and at the same time city we prevented the building from falling into total decay. Now, by resolution of the City Council, the building has been put up for sale with an uncertain outcome for us.
A diverse group of artists, activists, graphic artists and friends have expressed their views on the Museum of Women‘s Culture Regional-International – and their ideas for our future focus, our ideas, visions and projects. We have taken this time as an opportunity to rethink the Women‘s Museum – creating new organizational forms and utilizing new museum ‘best practice’ approaches. We are prepared to look for new ways to develop new structures working together with activists, artists, scientists, and cultural and social institutions in Fürth that stand up for inclusion, interculturality, internationality and women‘s rights. We also will continue our collaboration with the city of Fürth, and the institutions which have been so successful throughout the past two decades.

As Sinéad McCoole, Board member of IAWM expressed in her call to the people and civic leaders of Fürth:
We have long admired the town of Fürth for having such a wonderful place dedicated to women’s culture, history, and art, both past and present. The voices, stories and experiences are not just relevant to people in your region, but what this museum has done speaks to other communities, and in this time when European solidarity its importance has never been more apparent.
