Welcome to the Bremer Frauenmuseum

Jun 21, 2022

A new women’s museum has joined the International Association of Women’s Museums (IAWM). We would like to give them a warm welcome.

The Bremer Frauenmuseum in Germany is a virtual museum, which means it is cooperating on various projects with other institutions or organizations. The goal of the museum is to make known and visible the work and life of women from all spheres of Bremen’s society who played an important part in history or are still doing so today.

For that purpose the museum operates in three separate fields:

  • Collecting women’s histories and making them known to the public in form of lectures, exhibitions and publications.
  • Assisting female artists by organizing regular art exhibitions.
  • Promoting the naming of streets in Bremen after women, providing the authorities with background information.

The museum has about 30 members, all of them volunteers who work without payment. Also it does not receive any regular funds, but with each new project the museum can apply for official grants.

Last year it celebrated the 30th anniversary with a large exhibition at the local museum of Bremen about the history of female emancipation in Bremen and the part the museum played in this.
