FEMU AT THE RECTOR DECLARATORY, DR. GRAUE ON THE INSTITUTIONAL CHANGES THAT WILL BE MADE IN OUR UNIVERSITY IN ORDER TO FACE GENDER VIOLENCE

On February 28, the Rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, (UNAM), accompanied by women from different areas of the university community, presented new institutional measures to solve the problems faced by women within this University.

Dr. Graue announced the creation of the UNAM Gender Equality Coordination, as an integral part of the university structure, under the Rectory. Its objective will be to create and to implement institutional policies on the subject.

It will have axes of transversal action towards the other secretariats and coordinations of the institution, and its first action will be to convene forums by schools and faculties, and in the research subsystems, with a view to a University Congress on Gender. The Mexican Federation of University Women congratulates the Rectory for these measures and reaffirm its support for the university, looking forward to build a culture of substantive equality within our community.

FEMU PRESENTS PROPOSALS TO RESPOND TO THE LEGITIMATE DEMANDS OF THE ORGANIZED WOMEN OF THE CIVIL SOCIETY

The Mexican Federation of University Women, AC, (FEMU), concerned about collaborating in assertive progress in institutional change, which guarantees women the right to a life free of violence, presented to Dr. Olga Sánchez, Secretary of the Interior and member of FEMU, some proposals to help respond to the legitimate demands of organized women in civil society.

The proposals made covered the following items:

• Review of the Regulatory Framework
• Public politics
• Education with a gender perspective

In the meeting that was held with the work team of the Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Sanchez Cordero said that she has given the instruction to give priority to the issue of gender and elimination of violence to women, stressed that she had a radical commitment with equality. On the other hand, she thanked the meeting with FEMU academics who in an open dialogue made very relevant contributions to the subject.
